THE CASE FOR ENERGY-SAVING APPLIANCES for 4x4s

As the earth begins to realise that our enrgy reserves are dwindling at a fairly rapid pace and that ‘Carbon Footprints’ are becoming increasingly topical; so the manufacturers of appliances are realising that they also need to ‘come to the party’ with products that consume less electricity.

The movement to energy-saving lights, fridges, freezers and other domestic appliances has benefits to those who power their appliances away from the National Grid.  Solar systems can be made much smaller, and thus less expensive for those homes that employ energy-efficient appliances.

The use of auxiliary batteries to store energy for the use of fridges, lighting, TVs and laptops for those 4x4 users who spend several days away from Mains power, has made the introduction of energy-saving appliances most welcome!  Standard Domestic fridges can consume up to 5 times as much as energy-saving units.  The recent introduction of LED lights (although expensive) has resulted in more hours of potential lighting, or the use of more lights for the same amount of energy  consumed. The LED components also have 5-10 times the life of standard lights which off-sets the higher capital costs.
Another benefit for the 4x4 and camping enthusiasts is that LED lights do not tend to attract the insects – which can also be a blessing in some locations!

Improvements in motors and pumps in the area of lower consumption will also help those wishing to employ such motors for showers, fuel pumps, compressors and other 4x4 applications.  Add to this the rapid improvement of battery power via greater capacity without increasing size, and you have a brighter picture for the energy-starved 4x4 users.
